Many individuals have been scammed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scammers:<\/strong> KUSA (The Kennel Union of South Africa) has a page that is very useful&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kusa.co.za\/index.php\/kusa-initiatives\/buying-a-puppy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Notice &#8211; Beware Scammers<\/a>. This article gives a lot of information and should be read in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Irresponsible Breeders:<\/strong> Additionally, one should be aware of irresponsible breeders, as they produce\u00a0lots of puppies in poor conditions and with little consideration for their health and welfare (<a href=\"https:\/\/goldenretrieverclub.co.za\/wp\/?page_id=402\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"402\">Irresponsible Breeders<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The link <a href=\"https:\/\/goldenretrieverclub.co.za\/wp\/?page_id=250(opens in a new tab)\">Guideline to Purchasing a Puppy<\/a> will take you to a more complete list of the questions that one should ask of both the breeder and yourself before buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please keep the following in mind&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t just pay upfront for a pup. You need to go though the following steps&#8230;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visit and evaluate the breeder and his kennel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See the pups <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See the parents &#8211; at the very least, the bitch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See the dog and the bitch&#8217;s health documents (as highlighted below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#7a5f94\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><br>ETHICAL BREEDING<\/span><\/strong> <br>Our club advocates &#8216;ethical breeding&#8217; in that&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The dogs and bitches used are checked before breeding to ensure that there are no problems with hips, elbows and eyes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The breeders do not over use their bitches with respect to the number of litters they produce.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#7a5f94\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><br>SCAMS &#8211; THE IMPACT<\/span><\/strong> <br>Being scammed is one thing, but should you buy from the wrong breeder, You may get a pup that&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is not a thoroughbred dog: This may mean that you do not get the look or temperament that you wanted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The animal may have physical issues: The most common being hip \/ elbow&nbsp;dysplasia and genetic eye disorders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This can cause a lot of heartache later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#7a5f94\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><br>DYSPLASIA AND GENETIC EYE DISORDERS<\/span><\/strong><br>With responsible breeding, we are trying to control genetic problems that Goldens are susceptible to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With respect to the parents of the pup&#8230;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>KUSA Registered:<\/strong> Check the actual certificates of the parents to ensure that they are registered with KUSA (Kennel Union of South Africa)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dysplasia<\/strong>: Check that both parents have a Hip and Elbow&nbsp;Dysplasia&nbsp;Certificate indicating their classification and that they are within acceptable levels &#8211; See details below.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Genetic Eye Diseases: <\/strong>Check that both parents have a certificate&nbsp;for their Eye Examination &#8211; See details below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This will reduce your risks significantly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is Acceptable?<\/strong><br>The web has numerous articles on both genetic eye diseases as well as the classification of hip and elbow scores &#8211; and what levels are acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A newsletter from earlier this year&#8230;&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/91a64ed9c8d1\/golden-retriever-club-newsletter-lockdown-edition-april-4455946?e=[UNIQID]\" target=\"_blank\">News Letter &#8211; April 2020<\/a>&nbsp;has an article on Dysplasia that gives you some interesting links to follow.
